Historian Herbert E. Bolton considered missionary Andrés Pérez de Ribas's history of the Jesuit missions to be one of the greatest books about the Spanish Colonial era. The book described Spanish and Indian relations in Northern New Spain, just before the Jesuit Expulsion in 1767.

Editor Note: Historian Hannah G. McClain in her master thesis, “ 'Within and Without His Religion': The Formation of the Colonial Mexican Jesuits, 1600-1650" analyzes the process of identity formation of Jesuit missionaries in the first half of the 17th century in Mexico’s New Spain. Identity formation, also called identity development, is a complex process in which an individual develops over time an unique view of themselves and the group that they are affiliated with.
McClain also describes in her thesis the day-to-day activities of Jesuit missionaries in the New World and provides, in the editor's view, an "anthropology of missionaries."
Very little attention has been paid in the historical literature to the identity and the day-to-day activities of missionaries. McClain also has skillfully filled this void in clear and understandable writing without technical jargon through her analysis of missionary correspondence.
The only other scholar who has written on this subject is Charles W. Polzer's in his 1972 dissertation, "The Evolution of the Jesuit Mission System in Northwestern New Spain, 1600-1767" (see below). Polzer examines the writings of Eusebio Francisco Kino and Andres Perez de Ribas, the only missionaries known to have left any writings on mission methodology. Also Polzer writes about Jesuit rules and precepts as a way to understand the day-to-day activities of missionaries.
McClain analyzes the ideal Jesuit identity through the analysis of the required annual letters written by its missionaries. She discusses the general social and cultural aspects of the Jesuit community in Mexico together with a case study about the life of Padre Miguel Godínez, S.J. (1586-1644) and his famous book “Práctica de la teologia mystica.”
Although Kino's mission work is not directly discussed in her study, McClain gives us great insight into Kino's view of himself as a missionary and his daily activities. Padre Kino must have read and been greatly influenced by Godínez’s “Práctica de la teologia mystica” as shown in Kino's own writings. “Práctica de la teologia mystica” was first published in 1681 in Mexico just as Kino arrived in Mexico City.
Hannah G. McClain received her MA in history at the Division for Late Medieval and Reformation Studies at the University of Arizona, Tucson. Currently she is pursuing her PhD in History at the University of Texas, Austin.
Padre Godínez’s Irish birth name is Michael Wadding. To download a fascinating biographical sketch of Padre Godinez by Ernest J. Burrus, click Michael Wadding: Mystic and Missionary (1586-1644).

Editor Note: The 500 referenced entries in the bibliography on the website of the Associazione Culturale Padre Eusebio Francesco Chini, headquartered in Italy, contains books and articles specifically about Padre Kino, other entries that discuss Kino and others that give background information. The titles of the books and articles are in their original languages of English, Italian, Spanish and German.
As to the language translation on the bibliography page, it is best to use the Italian translation. It does not effect the titles in their original language. The three other language translation of the page in English, Spanish and German, may not be as complete as the Italian page translation.
This is the most extensive Kino bibliography, however there are many more Kino titles that will be added to the bibliography in the future.
An addition entry that has yet be added to the bibliography page is "Bozzetti di Claudia R. Missione San Xavier del Bac – Bozzetti di Claudia R. – Dai disegni originali di Katari Weiss, (San Xavier: The Spirit endures of Kathleen Walker) edito da Arizona Highways." This is an Italian translation of Kathleen Walker's book about Mission San Xavier Mission del Bac. Kathleen's book is highly recommended.
Excellent bilingual chronology with topic articles with beautiful illustrations and maps. 52 pages.
